Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Volcanoes, One Gorilla Family
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest in Uganda at about 33.7 square kilometres and one of the quietest, a corner of the Virunga massif that Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park share. It has one habituated gorilla family, a troop of golden monkeys, three volcanoes to climb and a cultural trail led by the Batwa, the forest people who lived here until the park was created. It sees a fraction of Bwindi’s visitors, and that is much of its appeal.
This guide explains Mgahinga for travellers deciding whether to include it. It covers the park and its setting, the Nyakagezi gorilla family and the permit system, golden monkey tracking, the three volcano hikes and what each demands, the Batwa Trail and its history, how Mgahinga compares with Bwindi national park, costs and the places where published fees conflict, where to stay and how to get there, the best time to go, a short current health note and the mistakes to avoid.

Mgahinga is not a place for crowds. It is a place for a gorilla family on the slopes of a volcano, a bamboo forest full of golden monkeys and a long day on a mountain.
The Park and the Virunga Setting
Mgahinga occupies the Ugandan slice of the Virunga massif, roughly eight percent of the wider Virunga Conservation Area according to one guide, and it is contiguous with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the southern sector of Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The name is said to come from a local word for piles of volcanic stones cleared from farmland at the foot of the mountains, which describes the landscape around the park well.
Wildlife can cross the borders, and the same gorillas and golden monkeys that live in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park may be found on the Ugandan side. The park headquarters at Ntebeko is about 30 minutes from Kisoro. Our separate guide to Rwanda’s national parks explains the Rwandan side, and the guide to primate tracking in Rwanda compares the experiences.

Gorilla Trekking: The Nyakagezi Family
| Topic | What to Know |
| The family | Nyakagezi is the only habituated gorilla family in Mgahinga; its size and composition change over time |
| Permits | Eight a day, at US$800 for foreign non-residents, or US$600 in the 2026 low-season months, the same as in Bwindi |
| Total gorillas | About 80 mountain gorillas in the park, according to one guide, a figure to treat cautiously |
| The trek | A climb through montane vegetation and steep, muddy ridges; one guide says it is often shorter than at Bwindi because the family ranges in a smaller area, though times are unpredictable |
| Time with the gorillas | One hour |
| Minimum age | 15 years |
Because only eight permits are available each day, Mgahinga fills quickly in the dry seasons, and it is worth booking early. A gorilla trek on one day and golden monkey tracking on the next works well. Our separate guides to gorilla trekking in Uganda and to the Uganda gorilla permit cost explain the permit and the reported 2027 changes.
Golden Monkey Tracking
Golden monkeys live in the bamboo zone of the Virunga volcanoes, and Mgahinga is one of the best places in Uganda to see them. They are quick, playful monkeys with gold-orange backs and pale cheeks, and a trek brings you within a few metres of a troop for an hour. One guide says the whole experience takes four to five hours, and that it is less strenuous than a gorilla trek.
Fees conflict. Newer guides give US$100 for tracking, with a habituation experience at US$140 or US$200 for four hours, while earlier research for this series reported US$60 in the 2024 to 2026 tariff. Ask your operator for the current price and confirm it in writing. Our separate guide to golden monkey tracking in Rwanda explains the experience on the Rwandan side, where the permit is about US$100.
The Three Volcanoes
| Volcano | Height | Time | What to Expect |
| Mount Gahinga | 3,474 metres | About 6 to 7 hours | The shortest and easiest, through bamboo forest to a swamp-filled crater about 180 metres wide |
| Mount Sabyinyo | About 3,634 to 3,669 metres | About 8 hours | The name means old man’s teeth, and the climb is demanding, with ladders and ridges |
| Mount Muhabura | 4,127 metres | About 8 to 10 hours | The highest and most demanding, with a crater lake near the summit and views into Rwanda and Congo |
The volcano hikes are day trips with a ranger guide, and the times depend on pace and weather. The mountains are often in cloud, so views are not guaranteed. Muhabura can also be climbed from Rwanda’s side. Our separate guide to the Bisoke and Karisimbi hikes explains comparable climbs in Rwanda.
The Batwa Trail and Garama Cave
The Batwa were forest hunter-gatherers in this area until the park was gazetted in 1991, when they were evicted without compensation. The Batwa Trail is led by Batwa guides across the lower slopes and ends at Garama Cave, also spelt Ngarama, a sacred site where Batwa kings historically held court and stored provisions, and where the community’s history is told and sung. It costs about US$80 in guides, and the income goes to the Batwa community.
It is among the most meaningful cultural experiences in Uganda, and it is best done with respect and curiosity. A Border Trail along the edge of the park is another short walk. Our separate guide to cultural tours in Uganda explains how to visit well.
Mgahinga or Bwindi?
| Feature | Mgahinga | Bwindi |
| Gorilla families | One, Nyakagezi | Many, across four sectors |
| Permits a day | Eight | Up to about 120 in one guide |
| Permit price | US$800, or US$600 in the 2026 low-season months | The same |
| Visitors | Few | Many |
| Other experiences | Golden monkeys, three volcano hikes and the Batwa Trail | Birding, community walks and a wide choice of lodges |
| Setting | Volcanic slopes and bamboo | Dense, steep rainforest |
| Best for | Travellers who want quiet, volcanoes and monkeys | Travellers who want choice and availability |
If you can choose, Mgahinga is the quieter and more scenic option, and Bwindi is the easier one to book. Our separate guide to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park explains the larger park.

Mgahinga is the natural link between Rwanda and Uganda on a combined trip. Our separate guide to gorilla trekking in Africa compares the two countries, and our guide to Uganda safari prices for 2027 explains the budget.
Best Time to Visit and a Current Health Note
- June to September and December to February are the drier months, with firmer trails and better views of the volcanoes.
- March to May and October to November bring rain, mud and cloud, with discounted gorilla permits in April, May and November 2026.
- Pack warm layers, waterproofs, boots and gloves, since the slopes are cool and wet.
- A yellow fever certificate is mandatory for Uganda, and malaria is present.
- Uganda says it is currently Ebola-free and restricts travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo, so do not plan to cross the Congo border; the park touches the Congolese border, and the outbreak, centred on Ituri province, has also reached North Kivu, so check current advice for the border area.
